The idea behind the Coach coat rack was born on a train ride, realizing that the passenger seat and the luggage rack describe a personal space within the larger space of the cabin – a ‘parenthesis’ that embraces the traveller. The final product thus resembles a ‘punched out’ part of a train. This reference was transferred into the context of the entrance area, and is still very much visible in the final product which offers a hat rack, a couple of hooks and a seat.
Coach is made of a single beech plywood element that is laminated with high pressure laminate for durability. The plywood part is almost as big as it can get, as it reaches the limits of technical feasibility.
As it is possible to install the Coach coat rack as a solitary element or multiple of it in a row, it can be adapted to the needs of various sized spaces in both the domestic and public realm. As it is wall mounted the floor underneath it remains empty which creates room for shoes, but also makes it easy to clean the floor; a useful feature in the entrance at home, in hotel rooms, locker rooms or hospital rooms.
Although the idea for the Coach coat rack seems simple, it took quite some time to turn it into a product.
